Veterans of the United States armed forces may be eligible for a broad range of benefits and services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Some of these benefits may be utilized while on active duty. These benefits are codified in Title 38 of the United States Code. This booklet contains a summary of these benefits.
Women’s Health
VA provides primary and specialty health care — including reproductive health care and 7 days of newborn care — to women Veterans. Women Veteran Program Managers are available at each VA medical center nationwide to advise, advocate, and coordinate care for women Veterans. Military Sexual Trauma (MST)
MST is the term that VA uses to refer to sexual assault or repeated, threatening sexual harassment that occurred while the Veteran was in the military. Sexual Assault and Harassment Prevention
The VHA Assault and Harassment Prevention Office supports the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA’s) commitment to providing a safe, welcoming, and professional environment for all employees, Veterans, volunteers, and visitors. Harassment or sexual assault will not be tolerated at any VA facility. All who visit a VA campus should expect to be treated with respect. Likewise, we also expect all who enter a VA facility to treat others with respect.

VA Sexual Assault and Harassment Prevention Office
If you witness or experience harassment at VA, report it. VA takes all reports seriously. Whether it’s a comment, stare or worse, you can report it to:
- VA Police or security
- Any VA staff member
- Your provider
- A patient advocate
- A Women Veterans Program Manager
- The Women Veterans Call Center at 855-829-6636
- VA customer service 800-698-2411 (option 9).
You don’t need all the details, and you can report anonymously. We will listen.
VA Benefits and Services
Women Veterans may be eligible for a wide variety of benefits available to all U.S. military Veterans. VA benefits include disability compensation, pension, education and training, health care, home loans, insurance, vocational rehabilitation and employment, and burial. How to Apply for VA Benefits: The specific VA benefit or program webpage will provide tailored information about how to apply for a particular benefit or program. Generally, service members, Veterans, and families can apply for VA benefits using one of the methods below.
- Apply online using the VA website, or
- Work with an accredited representative or agent, or
- Go to a VA regional office and have a VA employee assist you. You can find your regional office on our Facility Locator page.

Women Veteran Coordinators
There are Women Veteran Coordinator (WVCs) located in every regional office who function as the primary contact for women Veterans. WVCs provide specific information and comprehensive assistance to women Veterans, their dependents, and beneficiaries concerning VA benefits and related non-VA benefits. They may assist you in the claims intake, development, and processing of military sexual and personal trauma claims.

- Women Veteran-Owned Small Business Initiative – the first program of its kind in the federal government. WVOSBI’s mission is to equip, empower and educate Women Veteran entrepreneurs for success and economic opportunities
Education and Training
GI Bill benefits help you pay for school and cover expenses while you’re training for a job. Since 1944, the GI Bill has helped qualifying Veterans and their family members get money to cover all or some of the costs for school or training. Get help filling out an application
- Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30) Benefits may be used while the Servicemember is on active duty or after the Servicemember’s separation from active duty with a fully honorable military discharge.
- Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance – If you’re the child or spouse of a Veteran or service member who has died, is captured or missing, or is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability, you may be eligible for the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program.
- The Edith Nourse Rogers Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Scholarship allows eligible Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill or dependents using the Fry Scholarship to get added benefits.
- The Yellow Ribbon Program can help you pay for higher out-of-state, private school, or graduate school tuition that the Post-9/11 GI Bill doesn’t cover.
- VET TEC 2.0 (high-tech program) is a program that helps eligible Veterans and active-duty service members develop skills to start or advance their career in a high-tech industry. This program is limited to 4,000 paid participants in a fiscal year, but Congress may change the number of participants at any time.
- IBM SkillsBuild program offers more than 1,000 free online courses to help you start or advance your career. These courses are for both beginners and advanced learners, so you don’t need any subject-matter knowledge or experience before you enroll.
- VetSuccess on Campus is designed to provide on-campus benefits assistance and readjustment counseling to assist Veterans in completing their college educations and entering the labor market in viable careers. Under this program, a full-time, experienced Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and a part-time Vet Center Outreach Coordinator are assigned at each campus to provide VA benefits outreach, support, and assistance to ensure their health, educational, and benefit needs are met.

Rural Veterans
The VHA Office of Rural Health works to optimize the use of available and emerging technologies, establish new access points to care, and employ strategies to increase health care options for all rural Veterans.
Veterans who reside in rural communities that need a ride should contact the Veterans Transportation Mobility Manager at their local VA medical center. Veterans or caregivers can go to the Veterans Transportation Service website and view the appropriate state or scroll down the page for the contact information at participating VA medical centers.

Memorial Affairs Benefits
The National Cemetery Administration honors Veterans through burial benefits and memorial services. Learn about all of your Memorial Affairs Benefits
- Apply for Pre-Need – You can apply to find out in advance if you’re eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery. This is called a pre-need determination of eligibility—and it can help make the burial planning process easier for your family members in their time of need.
- Veterans Legacy Memorial – VLM is an online memorial that honors more than 10 million Veterans interred in VA National Cemeteries, VA grant-funded cemeteries, military-managed cemeteries (including Arlington National Cemetery), U.S. Park Service National Cemeteries, American Battle Monuments Commission cemeteries, and thousands of private cemeteries where Veterans have received a VA-provided gravesite marker since 1996.
- VLM for Living Veterans – VA’s Veterans Legacy Memorial, the largest online memorial site dedicated to America’s Veterans, now offers the opportunity for you, the Veteran, to privately provide your own images, autobiographies, military and life timelines, and historical documents. After you have passed away, if you are interred in a national or State/Tribal/Territory Veterans cemetery or receive a VA headstone or other memorial benefit, the content you’ve submitted will appear on your publicly-visible VLM Memorial Page as content authored by you. *You have to be pre-approved for Pre-Need before using VLM for Living Veterans.*
- Bereavement counseling – Grief counseling and transition support after the loss of an active-duty Servicemember, Reservist, or National Guard Soldier. If you’re the surviving spouse, child, or parent of a service member or Veteran who died, you may qualify for bereavement counseling through our Vet Centers. Bereavement counseling (sometimes called “grief counseling”) provides assistance and support for people going through emotional and psychological stress after the death of a loved one.
