Sangster, \u201cOur Flag.\u201d (VA)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NCA\u2019s collection exhibits vintage patriotism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Memorial Day was among the most popular American holidays that, a little more than a century ago, was celebrated with abundant, affordable, and colorful penny greeting <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/exhibits\/national-homes-postcards\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"104292\">postcards<\/a>. At the very time postcards exploded into a national craze, \u201cDecoration Day\u201d was being eclipsed by \u201cMemorial Day\u201d as the name of the holiday at the end of May when the nation honors its deceased service members \u2013 so these names were interchangeable. \u201cBefore the telephone, radio, television, and computer, the postcard was the chief means of communication,\u201d said one deltiologist (someone who collects postcards) in the 1980s.<sup data-fn=\"f9f80fe7-fe98-40f5-8c5b-4ea8d47716ad\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#f9f80fe7-fe98-40f5-8c5b-4ea8d47716ad\" id=\"f9f80fe7-fe98-40f5-8c5b-4ea8d47716ad-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> Technology has evolved again, so Instagram may be the best comparison now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhatever good or ill there may be in the picture post card craze,\u201d lauded the <em>Journal of Education<\/em> in 1910, \u201cthere are unlimited possibilities of good in them educationally.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"9aef0ca7-074c-4b2e-9dbd-a5394eead61e\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#9aef0ca7-074c-4b2e-9dbd-a5394eead61e\" id=\"9aef0ca7-074c-4b2e-9dbd-a5394eead61e-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> Education and research motivated the National Cemetery Administration\u2019s (NCA) History Program to acquire relevant postcards, most published between 1906 and 1913. For NCA, this ephemera falls into two categories: 1. \u201creal photo\u201d and edited views of national cemeteries that had matured in forty or so years, and 2. patriotic Memorial Day greetings of artist-rendered tableaus bursting with iconic American flags, eagles, and depictions of Veterans or those remembering them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interesting, the world\u2019s first official postal correspondence card was issued by Austria in 1869 to provide a cheap way for soldiers to write home during the Franco-Russian War (1870-1871) and other countries quickly followed. The first collectible U.S. postcards were produced for the 1892-1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Large and small publishers, printers, artists, and local stores generated postcards, which are a little more than 3\u201d x 5.\u201d Fancy greeting postcards are embossed, stamped so images stand out in relief, or the designs were printed with \u201cgold\u201d highlights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the output of prolific publishers like Raphael Tuck &amp; Sons Art Publishers to Their Majesties the King and Queen are well documented, many sources are not.<sup data-fn=\"d0fe2556-afdb-442c-ba6e-23a9bda7fcda\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d0fe2556-afdb-442c-ba6e-23a9bda7fcda\" id=\"d0fe2556-afdb-442c-ba6e-23a9bda7fcda-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> Most cards were printed in Germany until 1909, when foreign tariffs forced a diminishing supply to the United States. After U.S. entry to World War I in 1917, reduced access to raw materials further curtailed postcard production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s important, the picture or the message?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on NCA\u2019s collection of 200 or so postcards, the image on the front is more valuable than the message on the back; many were likely purchased and saved as a personal collection, never meant to be mailed. Two cards postmarked May 30, 1909, were both: one sender rhetorically asks, \u201cDo you like this one?,\u201d and the other describes the Tuck postcard \u201can album souvenir for Decoration Day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the rarest collectible postcard for NCA would be photograph-based scenes of Memorial Day programs at national cemeteries that show participants, programs, and the property\u2019s appearance. An excellent example, 1910, shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cem.va.gov\/cems\/nchp\/barrancas.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">Barrancas National Cemetery<\/a> in Pensacola, Florida, where troops are in formation, \u00a0visitors carry umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun, and an artist-enhanced rifle salute mingles with the American flag. Whereas a routine postcard view of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cem.va.gov\/cems\/nchp\/grafton.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">Grafton National Cemetery<\/a> in West Virginia \u2013 where the city\u2019s legendary Memorial Day parades conclude \u2013 is about the message. \u201cThis is w[h]ere we spent a very pleasant time on Memorial day,\u201d Mary wrote on the unsent card, \u201cThe parades were fine. The old soldiers very enthusiastic. The flowers beautiful. The day Ideal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A postcard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cem.va.gov\/cems\/nchp\/togus.asp\" rel=\"noopener\">Togus National Cemetery<\/a> in Maine, \u00a0mailed 1913, shows the grounds decorated with small grave flags and the Soldiers Monument draped with garlands and wreaths \u2013 all consistent with Memorial Day preparations. <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/100-objects\/object-10-togus-time-capsule\/\">Togus was the Eastern Branch <\/a>of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers and the campuses were popular for Veterans and tourists alike. No publisher. (VA)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In greeting postcard parlance, Decoration or Memorial Day is part of a larger \u201cpatriotic\u201d theme. The Civil War Veteran population was aging when the postcard frenzy took off, and that is how artists depicted them \u2013 stooped, white haired, occasionally <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/100-objects\/object-63-disabled-union-veterans\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"114073\">missing an arm<\/a>. Some are simple drawings and others are layered scenes that incorporate <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/100-objects\/65-6x6-unknown-grave-markers\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"114201\">graves in a cemetery<\/a>. Fragments of verse by nineteenth- and early-twentieth century poets such as Theodore O\u2019Hara, Francis De Haes Janvier, Margaret E. Sangster, and U.S. Navy Commander C. P. Rees appears on many cards. Artist C. Bunnell created a more pointed message with two figures, presumably Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, shaking hands over the caption \u201cUnder ONE Flag.\u201d Even the Sons of Union Veterans organization (<em>Filii Veteranorum<\/em>), established in the early 1880s, are postcard subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Memorial Day was established in 1868, but some imagery invokes all U.S. conflicts back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/100-objects\/object-7-portrait-joseph-winter\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"104326\">American Revolution<\/a>. The NCA collection has just one postcard referencing World War I, \u201c1861-1917 \/ The American Spirit,\u201d signed by ex-pat British graphic artist Archie Gunn who moved from drawing women to military subjects. Some Memorial Day cards eschewed Veterans or artifacts of war to simply emphasize the American flag and a general holiday greeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The popularity and significance of postcards as a research tool is a larger story not covered here and this glimpse at the narrow Memorial Day theme also overlooks how picture postcards help document the development of NCA\u2019s oldest national cemeteries.
