The campus is situated on what was once <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/featured-stories\/fort-whipple\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"103965\">Fort Whipple<\/a>, later known as Whipple Barracks, a U.S. Army post established in 1864.<sup data-fn=\"ee18d905-1f06-4a4b-984e-9860eaa2a7a4\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"ee18d905-1f06-4a4b-984e-9860eaa2a7a4-link\" href=\"#ee18d905-1f06-4a4b-984e-9860eaa2a7a4\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major Edward Willis set up the first location of Fort Whipple on December 23, 1863, at Del Rio Springs, Arizona (present-day Chino Valley). In May 1864, the fort permanently relocated twenty-one miles south, to a site 1-1\/2 miles east of Prescott along Granite Creek. (National Archives)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Whipple Parkway and the fort are named for Major General Amiel Weeks Whipple, an American military officer and topographical engineer. He worked for the War Department between 1848 and 1854, leading surveys of the new\u00a0U.S. and Mexico boundary and a possible transcontinental railroad route\u00a0along the 35th parallel from Arkansas to Los Angeles, California.<sup data-fn=\"2d4a47b8-1628-4d7d-bca0-47689bb8cb1e\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"2d4a47b8-1628-4d7d-bca0-47689bb8cb1e-link\" href=\"#2d4a47b8-1628-4d7d-bca0-47689bb8cb1e\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the railroad route survey, Whipple observed a valley full of grama grass, known as Chino grama, in an area 25 miles north of Prescott. (Library of Congress)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Leib Lane is named after Dr. Charles Leib, a personal friend of <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/100-objects\/object-30-lincolns-second-inaugural-address\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"104476\">President Abraham Lincoln<\/a> who was appointed a quartermaster in 1861. A controversial choice for the role, Lieb\u2019s appointment occurred while Congress was in recess, as his first appointment had been rejected by the U.S. Senate.<sup> <\/sup><sup data-fn=\"54b1dd97-0d4c-47fc-9a3d-b76b91c3ea91\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"54b1dd97-0d4c-47fc-9a3d-b76b91c3ea91-link\" href=\"#54b1dd97-0d4c-47fc-9a3d-b76b91c3ea91\">6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1863, Leib was appointed under contract as post surgeon for the army, and he joined Major Willis\u2019 expedition to the Arizona Territory to establish Fort Whipple.<sup> <\/sup><sup data-fn=\"7b389135-87e5-47c3-afb8-40f1fa0e3266\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"7b389135-87e5-47c3-afb8-40f1fa0e3266-link\" href=\"#7b389135-87e5-47c3-afb8-40f1fa0e3266\">7<\/a><\/sup> Mary Catherine, Leib\u2019s wife of eleven years, accompanied him on the trip, and she was the only woman in the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March 1864, Leib\u2019s contract was abruptly terminated by Major Nelson H. Davis, assistant inspector general for the Arizona Territory.<sup> <\/sup><sup data-fn=\"78497757-8ee8-4726-9b28-1c1ef119a865\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"78497757-8ee8-4726-9b28-1c1ef119a865-link\" href=\"#78497757-8ee8-4726-9b28-1c1ef119a865\">8<\/a><\/sup> Although the details of his termination are unclear, there is speculation about Leib\u2019s quartermaster duties with army contractors and missing funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July 1864, Leib unsuccessfully ran in the first Arizona Territorial election\u00a0as a candidate for delegate to Congress, losing to Charles D. When Whipple Barracks became U.S. Army General Hospital No. 20 in 1918, he was appointed as the hospital\u2019s first commanding officer.<sup data-fn=\"a7e357b7-489b-4ce5-bf07-6284c3370767\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a7e357b7-489b-4ce5-bf07-6284c3370767\" id=\"a7e357b7-489b-4ce5-bf07-6284c3370767-link\">11<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holmberg was born in 1879 in Lund, Sweden and later moved with his parents to Saginaw, Michigan. He attended Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for his medical education, graduating in 1908. The following year, he joined the army and graduated from the army medical school in 1910. <sup data-fn=\"773ad447-2ddd-47ab-a075-d55efd8c9112\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#773ad447-2ddd-47ab-a075-d55efd8c9112\" id=\"773ad447-2ddd-47ab-a075-d55efd8c9112-link\">12<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holmberg was stationed in San Francisco, Manila, Philippines and Fort Bayard, New Mexico before arriving at Whipple Barracks on May 9, 1918.<sup data-fn=\"a2daa45a-8eaf-4620-af7b-cd1c7f41ec88\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a2daa45a-8eaf-4620-af7b-cd1c7f41ec88\" id=\"a2daa45a-8eaf-4620-af7b-cd1c7f41ec88-link\">13<\/a><\/sup> The army reopened Whipple Barracks to treat soldiers <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/100-objects\/64-public-health-service\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"114138\">returning <\/a>from World War I that acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/100-objects\/076-presumptive-conditions\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"115038\">respiratory ailments<\/a>, particularly tuberculosis. Crouch was born in 1873 in Carrollton, Missouri, and in October 1917, she enlisted as a nurse in the <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/exhibits\/californias-ww1-army-nurses\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"103878\">Army Nurse Corps<\/a>. In May 1918, Crouch transferred to Whipple Barracks from Brownsville, Texas.<sup data-fn=\"2f917dce-51a0-4261-bbce-8328f09cac51\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2f917dce-51a0-4261-bbce-8328f09cac51\" id=\"2f917dce-51a0-4261-bbce-8328f09cac51-link\">17<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whipple Barracks hospital received its first patients on June 25, 1918. At that time, there were only three nurses on staff at the hospital. Crouch was instrumental in <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/history\/100-objects\/object-43-nurse-recruiting-poster\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"107506\">increasing <\/a>the nursing staff to thirty-four.<sup data-fn=\"fe81b7d6-732d-4ebf-9cd9-d5c5b3f2e40a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#fe81b7d6-732d-4ebf-9cd9-d5c5b3f2e40a\" id=\"fe81b7d6-732d-4ebf-9cd9-d5c5b3f2e40a-link\">18<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March 1919, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri to become superintendent of the Visiting Nurse Association. Throughout her life, Crouch was actively involved in nursing education and children\u2019s hygiene issues.<sup data-fn=\"ce6e33a0-04f9-416a-82fa-4ce44d01e415\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ce6e33a0-04f9-416a-82fa-4ce44d01e415\" id=\"ce6e33a0-04f9-416a-82fa-4ce44d01e415-link\">19<\/a><\/sup> She died in Kansas City on December 25, 1960.<sup data-fn=\"ace29aa6-8230-4253-ba15-a62b6f97d8ca\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ace29aa6-8230-4253-ba15-a62b6f97d8ca\" id=\"ace29aa6-8230-4253-ba15-a62b6f97d8ca-link\">20<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Allee Lane is named for Dr. Gail Darwin Allee, who was born in 1876 in Olean, Missouri. Allee attended Missouri University and St. Louis University for his medical degree. He stayed on the medical staff when the army transferred Whipple Barracks to the U.S. Public Health Service in 1920.
