Andrea D. Birnbaum, MD, PhD, MSL, serves as Acting Deputy Chief Academic Affiliations Officer and Director of the Oversight & Compliance Unit within the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Department of Veterans Affairs.
In this capacity, Dr. Birnbaum supports the Chief Academic Affiliations Officer in providing strategic leadership and oversight of the largest health professions education enterprise in the United States, encompassing more than 124,000 trainees annually across 60 health professions disciplines.

Her portfolio includes ensuring programmatic integrity, regulatory compliance, and the continued advancement of high-quality training environments for the next generation of health care professionals.
A board-certified Ophthalmologist, Dr. Birnbaum holds an academic appointment as Professor of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Prior to joining OAA, she served as Associate Chief of Staff for Education at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, where she provided leadership for health professions education at the facility level.

Catherine P. Kaminetzky, MD, MPH, FACP, serves as Acting Senior Advisor and the Director of Advanced Fellowships and Professional Development for the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA), Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. She assists the Chief Academic Affiliations Officer with overseeing the largest health professions education program in the United States, including over 124,000 trainees annually in more than 60 different health professions.

Catherine P. Kaminetzky, MD, MPH, FACP, serves as Acting Senior Advisor and the Director of Advanced Fellowships and Professional Development for the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA), Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. She assists the Chief Academic Affiliations Officer with overseeing the largest health professions education program in the United States, including over 124,000 trainees annually in more than 60 different health professions. She also oversees advanced fellowships and professional development programs which advance clinical care, health professions education, healthcare quality, and research of importance to Veterans’ healthcare. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and an experienced academic clinician educator and administrative leader with over 20 years of experience. She is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine of the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Kaminetzky is widely published in the areas of clinical education and medical education in ambulatory medicine. Prior to joining OAA, she served as Chief of Staff of VA Puget Sound Health Care System, one of the largest and most complex VAs in the nation.
