Machine Algorithm for Report Surveillance (MARS) is an adaptable technical capability that uses machine learning to triage ServiceNow incident tickets to determine if there is a potential patient safety impact. This is currently accomplished through a manual process by resources within Informatics Patient Safety (IPS). It is a time-consuming process that is limited by staff time availability. The MARS tool has demonstrated the ability to positively identify incidents that were not identified by manual review. Additionally, as more VAMCs and VISNs deploy the Federal EHR (FEHR) in the future, the number of incident tickets will increase – further impacting the feasibility of manual processes to review incident tickets.
ServiceNow ticket information forms the input to the MARS tool. Data from the federal Electronic Health Record is not used as an input to MARS.
Output from the system is a list of Service Now tickets that require human review to validate the MARS determination that the issue described in the ticket is a patient safety issue.
Intended users of the system are analysts from the OHI Informatics Patient Safety team and EHRM-IO Quality Safety and Value team members.
