Mr. Hume oversees VHA’s Office of Health Informatics (OHI), which includes the Office of Clinical Informatics and Data Management, Chief Nursing Informatics Office, the Office of Health Information Governance, and the Office of Strategic Investment Management. A major focus area for OHI is modernization of health IT and the implementation of the new Electronic Health Record (EHR)/Oracle Cerner solution while maintaining focus on VistA/CPRS. OHI is expanding Veteran health information interoperability with DoD and a growing number of community providers through the Joint Health Information Exchange (JHIE). OHI is responsible for VHA IT budget prioritization and business owner advocacy for IT needs. OHI provides policy and guidance to field workforce in Informatics, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Library, Privacy, Health Information Management, and Records Management personnel nationwide.
Mr. Hume has served for 14 years in the VA in various health informatics roles. Prior to joining the Department of Veterans Affairs in September 2007, Mr. Hume served 27 years in the United States Army culminating his military career as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Army Medical Department and Information Systems Consultant to the Army Surgeon General. During his career he also served as CIO for the 18th Medical Command in Seoul, Korea; the Army Medical Department Center and School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; the Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis, Washington and the Army Medical Command at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He also served as the Deputy Chief Information Officer for the Military Health System in Falls Church, Virginia.
