Mr. Alfred “Al” Montoya assumed the position of Deputy Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Operations, effective February 26, 2023. Mr. Montoya will continue to serve in the position of Acting Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Support Services (19SS), effective November 28, 2022. Prior to this role, Mr. Montoya served as Senior advisor to the Deputy Under Secretary for Health (DUSH) and Acting Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Health (USH) where he provided guidance and support for VHA priorities, including Infrastructure improvements and the Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act of 2022, known as the PACT Act of 2022.
Prior to coming to the offices of the USH and DUSH, Mr. Montoya served as the Director of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System and co-lead for VHA’s National Steering Committee for High-Reliability efforts. He was also instrumental in VA’s Asset and Infrastructure Review (AIR), an initiative designed to study the current and future health care needs of Veterans across America, and to evaluate VA’s health care infrastructure to ensure VA is ready and able to continue to provide Veterans with world-class health care access and outcomes.
Mr. Montoya represents VA on the American College of Healthcare Executives Council of Regents and has 13 years of experience in VA medical centers and ten years of Air Force service. He has held high-level leadership roles in VA, including Director for the VA Medical Center in Manchester, New Hampshire; Director of the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont; and Assistant Director at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System.
Mr. Montoya is happily married to his wife, Tammie, with whom he shares three children: Gabriel (16), Avia (22) and McKenna (24). In his spare time, he likes to spend time with his family, travel and enjoy nature as an avid beekeeper.
