John Thomas, Associate Executive Director for the Office of Real Property

John D. Thomas is the Associate Executive Director for the Office of Real Property (ORP) in the Office of Construction and Facilities Management (CFM) at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). ORP supports VA’s mission by acquiring land and leasing space for the construction of medical and medically related facilities that serve our nation’s Veterans. Mr. Thomas serves as the principal advisor to the Executive Director, CFM, on policy oversight for real property, including lease acquisition and the acquisition, management, and disposal of facilities nationwide.

Mr. Thomas began his career with the Government as a realty intern with the U.S. General Services Administration, where he gained project management experience with lease acquisitions and the management of Federal real estate. Mr. Thomas experience ranges from managing lease acquisitions for small field offices to prospectus level headquarters relocations. Mr. Thomas has led the development and national implementation of E-commerce leasing solutions and, since 2009, has served in a series of Headquarter GSA positions of increasing responsibility culminating in the position of Acting Assistant Commissioner, Office of Leasing. In this position he was responsible for policy and oversight of over 180 million square feet of leased space with an annual rental of $5.6 billion and was responsible for GSA’s national broker contract.

Mr. Thomas holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
