National Kidney Program
About VHA Kidney Program
Nephrology, or kidney medicine, is a specialty care service provided by the Veteran’s Health Administration (VHA) which includes the care and treatment of patients with acute or chronic kidney disease including dialysis.
Our services are all provided under the expert knowledge of Nephrologists (kidney doctors), who have had extensive training and education in the care of people with kidney disease and in the management of dialysis. This website provides convenient and quick access to a range of kidney-related resources within VA’s healthcare system, including:
- VHA dialysis facility locations and contact information
- Information and educational resources about kidney disease
- Benefits and services that are provided to Veterans with kidney disease
Mission
The VHA Kidney Program’s mission is to improve the quality and consistency of healthcare services delivered to Veterans with kidney disease nationwide. The VHA Kidney Program provides kidney-related services to dialysis centers throughout VA’s medical centers. Professional guidance and services are available in the form of consultation and policies developed by VA kidney experts. These experts are dedicated to furthering the understanding of kidney disease, its impact on Veterans, and developing treatments to help patients manage disease symptoms. In addition, the VHA Kidney Program provides VA healthcare professionals with clinical care, education, research, and informatics resources to improve healthcare at local VA dialysis facilities.

Kidney Disease Benefits
The Veterans Health Benefits Guide and Health Care Benefits Overview details the information Veterans and their families need to understand eligibility requirements, the enrollment process, and services available in VA’s healthcare system. Listed below are some common benefits related to kidney disease and dialysis services.
Beneficiary Travel
You may be eligible for mileage reimbursement or special mode transportation in connection with receiving dialysis or other VA healthcare services. Please visit VA’s Beneficiary Travel Benefits Page to see if you qualify.
Dialysis Care
The VA provides healthcare services to Veterans with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), whether or not they have a service-connected or non-service connected status. Dialysis care is a covered benefit under VA’s Medical Benefits Package for Veterans enrolled in the VA. This includes Veterans who have been previously diagnosed with CKD.
Disability
Veterans can download the Kidney Conditions (Nephrology) Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) to assist in the disability evaluation process. Please follow the instructions on the VA Disability Benefits Page for completing and submitting your completed DBQ form.
Exposures
Under a new law signed August 6, 2012, Veterans and families on active duty and living near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for more than 30 days between 1957-1987 may be eligible for medical care through the VA for Renal (kidney) Toxicity or other health conditions due to potential exposure to contaminated drinking water. Contact your local VA Healthcare Facility to receive care under the new law. Family members will receive care after Congress appropriates funds and VA publishes regulations. To learn more about the Camp Lejeune Act visit VA’s Public Health Website.
Geriatrics and Extended Care
VA’s Geriatrics and Extended Care Program offers long term care in hospice services, respite care, domiciliary care, and adult day health care for aging and chronically ill Veterans. Visit the VA long-term care page to get more information and apply for benefits.
Home improvements and alterations
Eligible Veterans may receive assistance for home improvements necessary for the continuation of treatment under the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Program. Examples of what HISA will pay for include improving plumbing and electrical work for dialysis patients. For more information and for instructions on applying for a grant please visit VA’s Home Improvements and Structural Alteration (HISA) Program Page.
Home Dialysis
Self-care dialysis performed by a patient or designated caregiver at his or her home is an alternative to in-center dialysis if the Veteran chooses the VA as his or her provider. Veterans who desire this alternative, and who are medically acceptable candidates, must be provided with the necessary training, medical equipment and supplies, and home support required to perform home dialysis. There are two types of home dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Both types must be made available to Veterans by the VA, or through Non-VA Care if the VA facility is unable to provide that service. For more information about home dialysis, please contact the VHA Dialysis Facility closest to you.
Non-VA care
Non-VA medical care in the Veteran’s community may be provided to eligible Veterans when VA facilities or services are not available. For example, if a Veteran is eligible for certain medical care, the VA hospital should provide it unless they are unable to due to geographical inaccessibility or insufficient capacity. For more information please visit the Non-VA Care Website.
Social Workers
VA Social Workers can help Veterans and their family members reach many services provided by VA:
- Advocacy
- Assessment
- Case Management
- Crisis Intervention
- Education
- High-risk screening
- Psychotherapy
Transplant
Transplant services are available for Veterans who are eligible. Contact your local VHA Dialysis Facility for more information. Temporary lodging may also be furnished at the discretion of the facility director for Veterans who undergo extensive procedures to include organ transplant. Temporary lodging information can be found in Chapter 3 of the “Medically Related Travel, Lodging, and Per Diem” section of the Veterans Health Benefits Handbook.
Learn about Kidney Disease
Your kidneys filter extra water and wastes out of your blood to make urine. Kidney disease means that the kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood like they should. This damage can cause wastes to build up in the body. For most people, kidney damage occurs slowly over many years, often due to diabetes or high blood pressure. This is called chronic kidney disease. When someone has a sudden loss in kidney function because of illness, injury, or taking certain medications this is called acute kidney injury. Acute kidney injury can occur in a person with normal kidneys or in someone who already has kidney problems.
The National Chronic Kidney Disease Fact Sheet can be found on the *Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.
Kidney Disease risk factors
Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney disease. Other factors include heart and blood vessel disease and family history of kidney failure. Additionally, African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians are at high risk for developing kidney failure.
Protecting your kidneys
It’s important that you manage your overall health when you have kidney disease or are at risk for kidney disease. The VA’s National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention offers healthy living advice which can help you to protect your kidneys and keep kidney disease from getting worse by slowing diabetes and high blood pressure.
Symptoms
Many people with kidney disease don’t have symptoms until their kidney damage is very advanced. For most people, blood and urine tests are the only way to know if you have kidney disease. Enrolled Veterans who have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or a close family member with kidney disease may want to talk with their Local VA Healthcare Provider about getting tested today.
Testing for Kidney Disease
Two tests are needed to check for kidney disease.
A blood test checks your GFR, which tells how well your kidneys are filtering. GFR stands for glomerular (glow-MAIR-you-lure) filtration rate.
- A GFR of 60 or higher is in the normal range.
- A GFR below 60 may mean kidney disease.
- A GFR of 15 or lower may mean kidney failure.
A urine test checks for albumin in your urine. Albumin is a protein that can pass into the urine when the kidneys are damaged. Albumin is a protein found in the blood. A healthy kidney does not let albumin pass into the urine. A damaged kidney lets some albumin pass into the urine. The less albumin in your urine, the better.
- A urine albumin result above 30 may mean kidney disease.
- A urine albumin result below 30 is normal.
Managing Kidney Disease
People with kidney disease can continue to live productive lives: working, enjoying friends and family, and staying physically active. You may need to make some changes to your diet and lifestyle to help you live a healthier and longer life.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle changes for early kidney disease include controlling blood pressure, managing blood sugar, if you smoke, are taking steps to quit, taking your medicines the way your doctor tells you, becoming more physically active, and losing weight if you are overweight. Learn more about physical activity, quitting smoking, and controlling diabetes from VA’s MOVE! Program.
Nutrition
What you eat and drink may help slow down kidney disease. Some foods may be better for your kidneys than others. VA’s Nutrition and Food Services offers nutritional information to Veterans.
Medication
People with kidney disease often take medicines to lower blood pressure, control blood glucose, and lower blood cholesterol. Two types of blood pressure medicines – ACE inhibitors and ARBs – may slow kidney disease and delay kidney failure, even in people who don’t have high blood pressure.
Some medicines can also harm your kidneys. If you have kidney disease, you need to be careful about all the medicines you take. Because your kidneys do not filter fluids well, medicines can build up in your blood. Your pharmacist and health care provider need to know what medicines you take so they can give you advice on how to protect your kidneys. Medication safety information can be found on the VA’s Pharmacy Benefits Management Services Page.
Treatment for kidney failure
Kidney disease can get worse over time, and may lead to kidney failure. Kidney failure means very advanced kidney damage with less than 15% normal function. The treatment options for kidney failure are dialysis, kidney transplant, or medical treatment without dialysis. Since the kidneys no longer work well enough to maintain health, the goal is to find a treatment that can replace kidney function and/or reduce your symptoms. Dialysis and kidney transplants are treatments not cures for kidney failure. There are two major types of dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Home hemodialysis versus in-center dialysis can be discussed with your provider at your Local VHA Dialysis Facility.
Dialysis facilities
VA Medical Center’s Specialty Care Services may vary upon location. Please use the directory below to locate VA healthcare facilities that offer outpatient dialysis care in your state. Dialysis facility extensions are listed in the directory below, however, operating hours may vary upon location. To contact the main VA facility, dial the phone number listed in the directory below without the extension. Kidney care may be made available to enrolled Veterans who are currently receiving dialysis care by the VA or enrolled Veterans who have obtained a referral from a VA primary care provider.
